Birds of the Refuge Overview

5 Birds of the Refuge Overview

This spot near the banks of Duck Lake provides an excellent opportunity to view a variety of birds, including herons, geese, and ducks. Listen for songbirds such as chickadees and song sparrows, as well!

Herons and Cranes
Bald Eagles

6 Herons and Cranes 8 Bald Eagles

As you gaze across Duck Lake, you're likely to see herons standing on the opposite shore. You might even spot a bald eagle flying overhead or perched on a snag!

Dusky Canada Geese

Overlooking the floodplain, you'll probably see Canada geese grazing below. But don't forget to look up when you hear flocks flying overhead in a V-formation!

Pileated Woodpecker

Look just off the trail for the rectangular holes in the dead tree. When trees die, they don't go to waste. Insects and fungus attack the weakened wood, then woodpeckers drill to feed on the insects and to create nest cavities.
