The Chinook name for Blue Jay is pronounced “skees skees”. In the Chinook stories Blue Jay was a nearly omnipotent character at a time when the world was occupied by the animal/people. In modern terms he might be called a trickster, similar in some ways to the Raven character in Northern Indian lore. Blue Jay was manipulative and self-centered, traits that often led to trouble for all. He was powerful enough to travel to the land of the dead to visit his sister. In the design, Blue Jay is shown in partial bird/human form, holding a double-bladed dagger. In his grip is a representation of person of lower status/power, over whom Blue Jay has dominion.
